From 10 of the largest butterflies in the world, half of them are found in Borneo and over 80 species are endemic. Surprisingly big, incredibly colourful and of fanciful shapes. What would the Borneo jungle be without these flying creatures?

Butterflies need heat to be able to move, which is why the Borneo’s humid and hot climate is perfect for their abundance. Their wings (four, not two) are actually formed by layers of chitin – the same substance that build insect’s exoskeleton or shellfish. Wings are covered with thousands of tiny scales that reflect light in different colours.

Butterflies are not long-lived animals. Some species can only live for few days. They have their taste receptors located in their feet and their eyes are able to see a range of ultraviolet colors that are invisible to the human eye.
